Corrosion and its prevention

Is your business working with materials that are affected by corrosion? Would you like to know more about this process and what you can do to prevent it?

Join us on 14th and 15th June for a 2-day workshop hosted by Sheffield Hallam’s academic experts from the Materials and Engineering Research Institute (MERI).

During this workshop, we’ll present the principles and occurrence of corrosion, its prevention and explore what types of corrosion exist, what causes them and where each can be found. We’ll look at different types of steel as well as other common metals and investigate what factors make corrosion more likely. We’ll equip you with the knowledge of how you can control corrosion and what techniques are used to predict in-life service.

Using hands-on laboratory exercises, you will have the chance to work with corroded samples and learn how corrosion damage is measured and diagnosed. We will also compare different ways to stop and prevent corrosion and assess which ones are the most effective and most likely to work in your environment to allow you to make the best decisions for your business.

You will also have the opportunity to network with other businesses in this sector and explore how collaborating with the university can help your business grow. You’ll find out more about the potential funding opportunities available to SMEs through the Sheffield Innovation Programme and how we can support businesses in and around the Sheffield City Region to grow and innovate through access to the latest technologies, state-of-the-art facilities, and academic expertise.

This 2-day workshop will cover:

  • Introduction to corrosion and techniques to identify material degradation
  • Different types of corrosion and real-life examples
  • Corrosion in steel and other common metals
  • Corrosion prevention and inhibition
  • Application of measurement techniques
  • Corrosion in industry
  • Hands-on laboratory work preparing various samples and setting up corrosion tests
  • Salt spray cabinet demonstration and subsequent sample analysis
  • Identifying and analysing corrosion in welded samples and under protective coatings

Who should attend?

This workshop should be of particular interest to those looking to further their understanding of corrosion and how to prevent it, working in the areas of metal manufacturing, metallurgy, heat treatment, steel works, thermal insulation, construction, maintenance and architecture.
