IR35 Workshop – How to prepare for the new rules and assess your risk

Event Venue and Description – Make UK, Sheffield

The IR35 rules are changing in April 2020 and you need to be ready.  If you use contractors, you will become responsible for assessing their tax status and may need to start deducting tax and NI via PAYE.

This workshop will inform what compliance will mean for your business, provide you with the tools to assess your risk and put in place a plan of action to manage your contractor relationships.  You will look in detail at the employee status tests so you can determine whether individual contractor relationships fall inside or outside IR35.

Using worked examples, you will see the potential financial impact on you, the end user, where PAYE deductions are required.

The technical terms will be unpicked so that you know how to complete a ‘status determination statement’, what ‘reasonable care’ means when making the determination and the risks and potential liabilities if you get it wrong.

During the workshop you will also explore options for next steps based on possible outcomes of status determination assessments, so that you will be able to make strategic decisions, such as;

  • Whether to employ some contractors directly and the cost/benefit of doing so
  • How to respond to contractors who demand higher pay to set off any reduction in take-home pay
  • What to do if a contractor insists that their status should not change

There will also be the opportunity to share experiences and intelligence with other delegates about how they and their contractors are responding to the upcoming changes.
