Logistics

With multi-million pound investments in road infrastructure, rail-freight terminals and the UK's newest airport (Doncaster Sheffield Airport), the region is emerging as the UK's central, multimodal hub location for logistics and distribution companies.

Sheffield City Region’s logistic sector is built on its strategic location. The sector already employs 31,000 people and is forecast to continue to expand, creating thousands of additional jobs every year. With the region’s superb access to UK and international markets, leading companies including Walmart, ASOS, BMW, IKEA and Amazon have selected the region for national and regional distribution centres.

Doncaster’s inland port is a landmark development for the city region. The iPort creates the UK’s largest port and logistics complex, reinforcing the region’s position as the logistics capital of the North. iPort is expected to create up to 5,500 jobs.

The newly built National College for High Speed Rail will be the catalyst for continued growth in Doncaster’s thriving rail sector. It will enable our existing world-class rail companies to flourish and be a magnet for attracting new investment. This combination of benefits will in turn deliver high quality jobs and sustained economic growth for the sector. Meanwhile HS2 will provide faster rail links to the South East allowing the city region’s expertise in logistics to reach new international markets.
