The trend for small Engineering / Manufacturing businesses to have no in-house materials expertise reduces their ability to diagnose and respond to, in-process and in-service failures. Such failures can constitute a crisis for a small business, particularly when they occur in-service. Equally, routine and well-informed investigation and solving of failures, particularly during processing and manufacture, is vital to a well-founded quality management system and often signposts the direction for useful innovation that can bring competitive advantage through new techniques / processes / products or by reduction of waste / re-work in an existing process.

You will learn about common failure causes in materials, an introduction to corrosion, the failure investigation process, sample taking, electron microscopy and more.
