South Yorkshire Sustainability Support Consortium – Procurement and Supply Chain

As part of the South Yorkshire Sustainability Support Consortium event series, we are pleased to announce the third event in the series, which will take place on Thursday 19th January 2023.

A major theme identified by participants at previous events is sustainability through procurement and supply chains. We will focus on three key topics:

• Integrating Sustainability for Competitiveness

• Challenging Conversations

• Social Value

Delegates will be able to attend all these short workshops/discussion sessions with our knowledgeable speakers who will be sharing their experiences, best practice, and illustrating real life case studies. The sessions will strongly encourage attendee participation so that learning can be shared and collaborations built with other businesses from the region.

Topic Overviews:

Integrating Sustainability for Competitiveness

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) benefit from supplying large public and private sector organisations. However, as criteria in tenders are modified to meet obligations for reducing carbon emissions and increasing social value, SMEs in the supply chain are at risk because they lack the capacity to compete successfully.

Through an overview of three key pillars of sustainability (environmental, social, economic), we will address why sustainability matters for SMEs and dispel a few myths, identify the usefulness of sustainability audits and outline how integrating sustainability can boost competitiveness.

Challenging Conversations

With the majority of emissions embedded in supply chains, sustainable procurement coupled with strong supplier leadership is critical to solving climate and related crises.

“Challenging conversations” are frequently cited as a barrier to progress. In this session, we will tackle this tricky subject head-on. We’ll discuss the reasons behind these barriers before illustrating how aligning objectives, using best-practice sustainable procurement approaches and having the right supporting culture can head off challenging conversations and generate better outcomes for all parties.

Social Value

We will be talking about some of the basics around what Social Value means and how it can be used to help meet Sustainable Development Goals both internally and externally. We will also share real-world experience of planning social value delivery projects and measuring impacts from a procurement perspective, providing a case study from working with large Councils.
